Most recently, Hartwell's work concentrates upon social disorder and violence, both here in the United States and abroad.

Her interest in human nature has led her to investigate the psychological aspects of gender difference, and the ways both men and women contribute to violence.

Hartwell is presently teaching printmaking and papermaking at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida and she has exhibited nationally in over 100 juried shows since 1969.
