Tipton received her BFA in Ceramics from the Memphis Academy of Arts, Tennessee and her MFA in Ceramics from Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. She has been a working studio artist since 1974. From 1978 to '81 she was Copy Editor and from 1982 to '86 Associate Editor of Ceramics Monthly magazine, Columbus, Ohio. She has been a Visiting Artist in Ceramics at the University of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, 1986 to '87, and a Sessional Instructor at the University of Calgary and the Alberta College of Art, Calgary, 1987 to '93. Since 1992, she is also Editor / Producer of the quarterly publication, contact: Ceramics from a Canadian Perspective.
